McEvoy quotes elsewhere from S. Fry:
"Mechanical waves that give rise to perceived sound only become 'sound' when they are perceived as such - otherwise they are just mechanical waves."
"As light is not sight so mechanical wavelengths are not sound." (McEvoy's words, elsewhere).
I would agree, and so would Grice.
Grice's study has not been studied thoroughly. Perhaps by Coady in his "Martian" article. Since Grice does mention Martians.
Grice, alla best phenonenology, provides I think like 5 criteria for the distinguishing of the senses. And he wins!
Then there's esse-est-percipi, alla Berkeley, also touched by R. Paul in his retrieving this bit about the 'sound' a tree makes when falling in forest and nobody around to hear it.
--- Etc.
