From Harborne to Milford -- and back

Dale has this beautiful profile, featuring:

"Milford, Pennsylvania home that was the final one of Charles Sanders Peirce. I thought I would make this my profile picture for now to give at least a little evidence of my admiration"

Indeed.

It would be good to revisit all his destinations. Meanwhile I will revisit all of Grice's.

BORN in Harborne. Most historians have him born in Brum (Birmingham). Not true! Harborne was Staffordshire!

---

CLIFTON. This was Grice's second destination. Public school there. His prep education was spent at 'home' (not mine, but his). His mother ran a prestigious school, and his father was bankrupt so there you go. A good thing about Clifton is that it allowed Grice to learn Greek, thus being able to concentrate on true philosophy by the time he was at Oxford.

CORPUS CHRISTI. Grice's 'home'. He spent his undergrad years playing football, though.

MERTON. He was at Merton for just a year. He married the sister of a Mertonian.

ST. JOHN'S. It is not usual to quote the college, but Grice's Meaning comes out as coming from "St. John's College". On the other hand, his earlier "Personal Identity" (Mind, 1941) comes out as "University of Oxford" -- but then put the blame on the war.

BERKELEY. His 'at-homes' in his colonial house up the hills were attended by a few. Including Susan Schiffer, as I recall!

--

Etc.

INTERIM posts.

HARVARD. That "philosophy" hall is just wonderful. Grice visited too many campuses, but this was possibly the most important one he visited. He delivered the William James lectures there.

Someone should provide a list of all the campuses he visited.

S. Brown, in his book, notes that Grice was visiting professor at Seattle in 1990. But Grice died in 1988, so this cannot be.

But yes, he accepted the position, and would lecture at Seattle when he was 'forced' to retire from Berkeley.

--- Cheers.

Speranza
