As R. E. Dale notes in a footnote to his "Theory of meaning", the fact that Langer was 'anti-Gricean' (not the word Dale uses -- he uses a better expression which I should retrieve) does not make her work less interesting.
Oddly, I was recently discussing, elsewhere, Langer's work in the field of aesthetics. She was born in New York City, and learned music as a child. I was asking an opera fanatic if he had any knowledge as to what opera composers may have influenced Langer. "Wouldn't know about that; but apparently she influenced Wagner: the langer the better".
