Grice on reciprocal altruism

From online source:

According to Grice (1988), reciprocal altruism and the detection of cheaters that it implies was responsible for the rapid evolution of cognitive capacities exhibited by higher primates. A third-order intentionality is necessary to detect cheaters and to gain advantages as a cheater (e.g., the recipient wants the altruist to believe that he intends to reciprocate).
