Grice speak of
'ichthyological necessity'
as a stupid concept. "Surely we don't need a notion of _fish_ necessity, whatever that may refer to" (Grice, The Kant lectures).
On the other hand, there are birds. This is a Griceian reading -- by Green and Bar-On -- of Marler. Their study was commissioned for a book on American philosophy (Rubinstein, ed), so it's natural (nonnatural?) they couldn't concentrate on Grice, much. But they manage.
They write:
"In a survey of a half-century of ethological research,
Marler, in "Bird Song" considers various forms of bird
calls (as distinct from bird songs, which tends to
be longer and more acoustically complex)."
And less otiose.
"In the chaffinch, calls have the following functions."
By uttering x, the chaffing meant:
1. courtship.
2. aggression.
3. predator alarm
4. announcement
5. exchange of food
6. distress
7. group proximity maintenance.
"There may also be a ‗regenruf‖, predicting rain.)
"In the domestic chicken we find a repertoire of 18 calls"
-- and no song, alas.
"Including those for aerial predators and food."

In "Reply to Richards", Grice objects to ascribing m-intentions to Aristotelian animals excluding 'homo sapiens'. Homo sapiens is the only animal which CAN mean alla Grice. I agree.

How much of this 'm' in m-intention, is not like m-n rather than m-nn (natural rather than unnatural, as only homo sapiens can provide?).
For Grice, the primacy of homo sapiens is experimental. As a matter of FACT, chimps cannot 'mean'. He did write, Grice did, that he should read more about 'chimp literature' (cited by Chapman, though). But then, if a philosopher has to read so much, and do the groceries, etc. -- what time do we have to do philosophy?
