H. P. Grice and the Grecians at Oxford
At Oxford, J. L. Austin was not, as H. P. Grice was, regarded as a classicist.
Grice would often complain.
Had Oxford retain the "Graeco-Roman" tradition, we would not have had Austin lecturing us about 'see,' and 'hear.'
Most of Austin's leaning towards the 'ordinary' language was due to his reluctance to go by traditional philosophical definitions of terms -- and sometimes the need to translate, mainly for his P. P. E. tutees.
