--- by J. L. S.
Stephen Yablo used to say. Echoing, in some way, J. D. Atlas. Atlas is very pessimistic about this. He says that Grice possibly had NIGHTMARES about this.
We take "p" and we are never sure what we mean by it.
Plus, implicatures happen, and by uttering "p" one may implicate "q" or not. Grice is always careful in noting the disjunctional indeterminacy of it all.
Recent theorists have talked of underdetermination. Notably Atlas. Enough to want to become a rocket scientist, instead.
Or not.
