P. A. Stone, half in joke, called me
Grice's most dedicated apostle
see his "Jesus Grice Almighty", elsewhere.
-- I commented him,
"Egstactly. Especially since Schiffer apostised, and all that."
It's very sad that Grice's night stand table -- as he died in a San Francisco hospital, in August 1988, was Schiffer's new (by then book). "Just remnants of his _meaning_." he said.
Problem with Schiffer -- who is elsewhere, and wrongly, described as "a student of Grice" never was -- he was a student of the more minor (is this redundant?) figure, P. F. Strawson (* on 'minor' "What's wrong with that? -- A E Housman, minor poet).
Another of his problems, Schiffer's, is or was that he was born, or is born, as the Germans say, in NJ, Atlantic City -- hence his 'obdurate regresses', Grice comments (WoW:xviii).
Etc.
Ref. Schiffer, "I trust Paul will bear my apostasy" (in "Papers written as a tribute to Paul Grice". "Well you mis-trust".
Etc.
