Grice and Empedocles on ichthyological exaptation

--- by JLS

--- From wiki, "Dawkins"

"Trivers, Robert (1971). "The evolution of reciprocal altruism". Quarterly Review of Biology 46: 35–57. doi:10.1086/406755."

For Empedocles, we were all _fish_ and later some came out of water, etc. Grice speaks of 'ichtyological necessity' in Aspects of Reason. "People are so into pigeonholing, that", or words", "I wouldn't be surprised if they speak of ichthyological necessity".

The point of this obscurely titled post, to drop evidence of Grecians, and not just Griceans, on 'evolution' and stuff. M. Chase, for example, argued against Aristotle as an evolutionist -- in discussion with me in CLASSICS-L, and since he may be right, I think it's best to deal with Empedocles and the earlier evolutionists. This may bring a nice Lit. Hum. ring to some of the opponents (or proponents) of Dawkins, etc.

Etc.
