Why the self is not a substance

Well, thus wrote Ian Gallie in Mind, "Is the self a substance?", vol. 45.

Grice cared to quote Gallie in his "Personal idenity" where 'self' and "I" are taken as synonymous. Grice concludes that Gallie is right. (And congratulates him on having the gall to say it). The self or "I" is a logical construction rather.

Grice, 'Personal Identity' (_Mind_, vol. 50, repr. in Perry, _Personal
Identity_).

Gallie was Oxford, born in Scotland, educated in Lancashire
