One has to admit that things like 'custos custodum' as uttered by Constantine or what have you will, as M. Davidson pointed out in his first contribution to the other sub-thread, collect the dose of hatred from fellow Christians but not yet Catholic! Supervisor of supervisors, indeed!
It's obvious, and I cannot agree more with M. Davidson, that the play on
words here, on 'episcopos' (the eye that sees but does not see itself) is
quasi-rhetorical, if not 'metaphorical' (Davidson's sobriquet) and an antecessor,
no doubt to the hate-speech of Charles the First.
