I SEE THAT STANLEY HAS USED 'rational reconstruction' in his 1995 PhD (online), submitted to the Massachusets Institute of Technology (Oh, what Grice would say AGAISNT philosophy as a technology!) under Stalnaker!
Stanley writes that 'actual' practice, by philosophes, is a 'confusing' mixture of 'rational reconstruction' and something else! I think he means, 'what is implicated'. He notes this was indeed Grice's term of art. But was he reconstructing a notion, e.g. "he suggested", "he hinted", "he meant", "he implied" -- or what?
