Why Grice Chose Conversation As The Unit Of Analysis

--- by J. L. S.
-------- for the GC.

He didn't.

Or, why not?

---- My claim, or one of them, perhaps on a Friday night, it's that he was echoing Nowell-Smith. Nowell-Smith had mentioned "contextual implication". As Chapman notes, for Grice "context" is, strictly, 'the conversation so far'. And we know that 'implication' is triply if not more ambiguous. Apply and you get: conversational implicature instead!
