One wonders --: Kant used "Modus" for something pretty abstract. Grice used Mode and Manner (both) in his 1964 lectures on conversation (archival material cited in _Grice_, Palgrave, by S. R. Chapman). He uses 'Manner' only in WoW, i.e. 1967, after Kemp's translation of Kant --

One can see (yet not share!) Grice's preference or point in the preference! "The manner" of what we say, as he was wont of saying. The 'mode'. Hence 'manierism', or in English, 'mannerism'. Modista has quite a different connotation. And one wonders what Kant was thinking, anyway. -- (We know: Aristotle's fifth category: the contingencies which are neither first substance, nor quale/quantum, nor relatio).
