Caring for Carey

Carey is to be congratulated. She had the moxie to talk 'HEL' history of English in "Legacy of Grice" but then it WAS organised by the linguists marching behind K. Hall (Proc. Berkeley Ling. Soc, vol. 16, ed. K. Hall). Her piece going,

which is all about the misuse of 'have' and 'got'.

"Got" misused as per Johnson:

"She's got lovely blue eyes"
"From whom?", Boswell inquired.
"What d'you mean, from whom?"
"From whom did she GET them?"
"Youse a Scot. From her papa, of course".

"Has" as misused by Shakespeare

"The Queen of Hearts she is made some tarts.
The Knave of Hearts he is eat those tarts"

--- "have eaten"

"I have a tart eaten". "I have eaten a tart". (Tart, Cockney slang, too apres, sweetheart, prostitute, and cfr. rasberry tart, too).
