What the Butler Did

---

Grice (PPQ, vol. 67, p. 10) finds, unlike Davidson, 'action' "portenous and [bearing a] theatrical flavour" as indeed 'act'. But 'do' is TOO happy a denizen of our carefree chatter.

For, one asks,

What did the butler do?

"[This] may be quite idiomatically answered by" he ---

o. saw it.
i. hit me on the nose.
ii. fainted.
iii. burst our laughing.
iv. just sat there.
v. didn't do anything, but just SAT there.
vi. left his sandwiches untouched.
