Socrates, "a greedy fat man"

--- Grice uses this example (PPQ, vol. 67, p. 4) to analogise it with

_him buttering parsnips_.

"If we pick on what looks like
a relational verb, for example "to butter"..."

we find ourselves in the less mysterious predicatement:

"we may take our choice between [sic] describing Socrates"

"as

1. a man
2. a fat man
3. a greedy fat man.

".
