---- By J. L. S.
J. Kennedy informs us, in "Grice and Brum" (comment thread) that he's coined a word (yesterday) called, 'squintessence'. The word is not really 'called'. _I_ call it.
The exercise in semantics-cum-pragmatics here is:
"squint (adj.) 1563, shortened form of asquint (adv.) "obliquely, with a sidelong glance" (12c.), probably related to skwyn in odskwyn "obliquely" (c.1440). The verb is attested from 1599; the noun from 1652."
