--- YES, I KNOW THAT JASON K. is rather into brighter shorter fiction than longish novels, but hey, am browsing Leech's/Short's chapter, "Conversation in the novel" and will discuss the examples they explicitly mention in the relevant section on Grice. Grice is first mentioned on p. 294. This is a manual for students, but Leech is to be credited as an early Griceian of good English vintage -- educated at UCL, he moved to Lancaster, etc.
