An Englishman in New York: Grice in Manhattan

Speranza

Dale, in footnote to his "Theory of meaning"

"I have found no direct evidence that Grice read Gardiner."

--- Chapman, a linguist, is sometimes frustrated by Grice's inability to make things _explicit_.

In any case, Dale is thoroughly correct. As we see Furberg (who cites Gardiner) was Grice's DPhil student (or son) at Oxford. So, Grice shoud have heard of Gardiner, which should not implicate as to implicate Grice hisself (sic) in the actual reading of what Furberg provided.

  1. Also, Gardiner quotes from Marty, who may have influenced Grice via Marty.
