Figurative uses of 'phren' and Grice's aspects of reasoning

Speranza

While 'hebephrenia' is classified as a type of schizophrenia, as a matter of fact, this obscure noun was coined BEFORE 'schizophrenia', to refer to "adolescent insanity" (as per a 1886 definition). "Hebephrenia" was -- as opposed to "Schizophrenie" which came up in German, hence the -ie suffix -- coined directly in Modern Latin by the German psychiatrist Ewald Escker in 1871, from Greek hebe "youth" (see Hebe (1)) + phrene "mind" (see phreno-) + abstract noun ending -ia. Related:Hebephreniac.
