I couldn't help but reminding him of Grice's adaptation of Descartes's cogito:
If they work, they exist
-- and also cited by Chapman, fortunately, on p. 173 -- if not by that name which possibly unappealed her: "In "Method", he used the metaphor in offering house-room to even unexplained entities if they were able to help with the housework" -- Grice's self-confessed snobbery, and one's reluctance to be seen 'except in the best of companies' ensues)!
