↑ (Grice on 'spin')

Jeremy Bowman, who contributes often and brilliant to CHORA, is often and brilliant citing Austin's direction of fit.

Whereas for Austin there are two of them:

arrow up and arrow down

-- spin as used in chemistry that is, negative and positive.

For Grice there is ultimately just one. Word-to-World: for Beliefs reduce, in his view, and mine -- to Desires!

"We soon believe what we desire"
"Desire is the Father of Belief"

Ref. Oxford Dict. of Proverbs

Grice's pedantic reduction, in the nice sense of 'pedantic', in Grice 2001, predated perhaps by footnote annotations by Grandy in a 1973 paper -- "modulo" and all.

And this my marginalia to Chapman, p. 68 -- It's obvious I'm reading her book backwards as I drop these notes. And there are still a few (pages) to go!

  1. I love the idea of a one-spin only! The conative one, of course!
