Grice wrote extensively on this.
But _Strawson's_ the strawman to blame. He started it all when, to sound witty, had this symbol in the sub-section of the book he submitted to Methuen -- and got published, back in 1952, if you can believe that.
Strawson entitled the section
"if and ⊃"
and the rest is legend.
PS. I must have discussed this elsewhere -- I'm sure I did, with gory details which includes my outing Edgington's local ignorance -- vis a vis Philo. Philo here is not abbr. for philosophy, but the name of that distinguished Grecian who named ⊃.
