Observation, Observational -- and Grice

We are discussing the priority of observation, sensation, and empiricism -- and the problem with Kant and Grice.

I agree with J that it all begins with perception.

"Nihil in intellectu quod prius non fuerit in sensu".

-----

Which is back to 'number three', which started the discussion -- vide platonistic philosophy of mathematics.

Unlike "rotten" -- 'three' is a different adjective as applied to, say, 'eggs':

--- There were ROTTEN eggs in the basket. I could smell them.
--- There were THREE eggs in the basket. I could see them.

---

It seems that while the superficial logic is similar, a formalisation of (ii) requires what Quine calls a numeric quantifier. His example, in Methods of Logic, was:

--- The twelve apostles were drunk.

--

This he formalised as (Ex12)Dx.

Clever, eh?
