Talking of Chomsky, as per my previous, I was reminded of S. R. Chapman. She is lovely, and I love her. But her bio of Grice tends on the reiterative. She keeps reminding us that Grice was a philosopher, that all his conceptions had long philosophical pedigrees, and that the philosophers Grice quote are philosophers.
She is _not_. She teaches English at Liverpool.
As a friend of mine suggested, "A biography of Grice by a linguist? I might just as well read a biography of Chomsky by an architect".
But then my friend _is_ an architect.
