There is a Chinese website dedicated to the philosophy of Grice. It´s mainly in Chinese except for a few, shall I say, typos, in English alright. They claim that the "H" in "H. P. Grice" stands for "Henry".
In any case, it´s better that that big misquote by Chomsky. In his 1966, Aspects of the Theory of Syntax, he quotes Grice in the index as being
"A. P. Grice"
My reconstruction:
"We´re proofreading your book, Prof. Chomsky."
"So?".
"You have "Grice, P." -- is this _the_ Grice?"
"Yes, why?".
"We thought "P" was his second initial. Wasn´t he A. `/ei/ P., or H. /eitch/ P. or W. /wei/ P.?"
"I´m pretty sure it´s /ei/ P."
"Thanks, doc."
