Black versus Grice

Speranza

Black is a straight translation of "tcherny" from the Russian. (Max Black's father was born Lionel Tcherny, and Max Black was born Max Tcherny. Lionel Tcherny changed his surname to Black when he settled in London.

On the other hand, Grice is a straight translation of 'gris' in Anglo-Norman, meaning grey or gray. According to an alternative theory, it means 'pig' in Scots.
