Herbert Paul Grice and Peter Thomas Geach

Speranza

If Grice's first paper was on "Negation", 'negation' is also a topic discussed by Peter Thomas Geach in his first book, "Mental Acts".

He uses the example,

"not red"

as a refutation of empiricism. Quite the contrary of Grice's approach in his early "Negation"!

Incidentally Geach holds a MA both from Oxford (1951) and Cambridge (1971), so we can safely assume that, like his wife, G. E. M. Anscombe, he was 'Oxbridge' in more than one way.

(The word "Oxbridge" should not be used loosely as a portmanteau, but to qualify those with double allegiances, as it were).
