------- for the GC.
THIS IS Folder 28, and it's non-dated. The point here is M. Hollis. I would contact him, but he is dead. M. Hollis was the only serious philosopher to consider the topic of rationality seriously. Hollis, who was Oxford educated, specialised in 'relativism', which surely overlaps with Grice's interest in 'valuing'.
For Grice, 'valuing' IS a rational activity. His point was that rationalism had taken a narrow view when rejecting 'valuing' as an irrational activity. Grice possibly held that SOME valuing IS irrational, but that, qua philosophers, we should be concerned with the rational basis of 'rational' valuing. Not an easy task.
The strength here is Anglo-American philosophy, but there's this Italian lady, Marina Sbisa, who has shown an interest in this in her plenary talk at the Conference at San Marino on 'The Heritage of Grice'. So I should contact her.
Cheers,
J. L. Speranza
