It is the received opinion that the distinguished surname, "Grice", is Anglo-Norman in origin. But there may be divergences, unreceived ones, at least by me.
The word means 'a species of extinct pig' in Scots, and it would take some to argue, alla Reaney (The origin of English surnames) that "Grice" qua surname derives from this root. However, since I find the word 'grice' a delight, I have titled "The Grice Law" accordingly with the use that the Wikipedia confers to this phrase, under the entry "grice".
On the other hand, usually the right one, "Grice" derives from that Romance word (if Romance it is) to indicate the shade of 'value' between ... er ... white ... and black.
The coat of arms is truly beautiful. My second-best after the Speranza one!
Cheers,
J. L. S.
