Grice on desirability

Levinson misquotes Grice, "Probability, desirability and mood operators" as "Probability, defeasibility and mood operators". The thing is a 1973 mimeo by Grice.

Grice did try, later, to reduce

"Peter believes that p"

to

"Peter wants that p".

--- vide Grandy in "Journal of Philosophy". Grice does this at length in "Conception of Value". So, he was one to argue for a reduction of moods, and indeed, Harnish, in "In the mood" (in the mode, strictly) notes that Grice looked for an invariance.

----

So, it may do to explore what Grice meant by

desirability,

since it should be at the _root_ of the thing, here.
