'THE CONFLICT,' Grice concludes his "Actions and Events" (p. 35), between one part of our rational nature, the scientific part, which calls (or seems to call) for the universal reign of DETERMINISTIC law, and that other part which insists that not merely moral responsibility but EVERY variety of rational belief demands exemption from just such a reign."
A few problems are evident here. The conflict is more apparent than real. Moral responsibility is not really a 'belief', even. But let that pass. The paradox is that an agent is morally responsible if he believes in a non-random universe. How can I save the humanity, etc., if the universe is all about atoms 'swerving' as they please. There must be indeed 'deterministic law' for me to even think I can CAUSE stuff. Or not.
