Case I: "The chairman of the Berkeley Philosophy Department is in the Department office"

---- by JLS
----- for the GC

--- says the secretary to the chairman of the Berkeley Philosophy Department to an inquirer. I cannot see what job is the specification of "Berkeley" doing here. Surely it would be otiose for an inquirer to doubt where he is.

Grice writes:

"If I make a standard statement of fact such as [as per header], what is signified ... may for present purposes be treated as being the conventional meaning of the signifying expression" and ALSO 'what the signifying expression says" (emphasis mine. JLS).

I cannot think of other examples!
