This Year of Grice

Christians can be fun, and I'm one, so I know. Funny queer.

Like this silly (i.e. blessed) idea, "This year of Grice". Oops, sorry, "Grace". What gives? The "This" is deictic, but not always,

"There's this guy who meets this gal"

is _not_ deictic (vide Levinson, _Pragmatics_, section on "Deixis" -- non-deictic uses of deictic pronouns). But 'this' is possibly meant as deictic in "this year" of grace.

But "Grace". This is meant as a homage to Christ.

Christians _are_ fun. There is a green hill far away, without a city wall. As if you'd ever seen a green hill, and far away, too, WITH a city wall.

As a New Yorker lifelong native Christian friend of mine, "Leads us not to Pennsylvania Station".

Cheers,

JL
