The Gricean Ghost in the Gricean Machine
Grice disliked Ryle (like the rats). Not personally: he loved him. Philosophically. Take that hateful Ryleanism: the ghost in the machine. What ghost? What machine? Surely we're Aristotelians: the soul is the _function_ of the body. Sema soma. There's no ghost, except at Canterville. And 'machina' is car in Italian. So go figure.
