"Kanji kwen"

We are analysing Grice's

"That remark, 'Smith coulnd't get on without his trouble and strife,' meant that Smith found his wife indispensable" (WoW:214)

--- and that he was a masochist --: this latter implicated by the choice of the most offensive piece of slang in the lingo.

I am a worn traveller. When in Japan, I overheard the remark,

"Kanji kwen"

I asked: What does that remark supposed to have meant?"

"Oh, that she thinks he 'loves' her 'husband'. Literally, she said she loved her 'kanji', which literally translates as 'oversize garbage,', or 'bulky rubbish', if yo ask."

----

"Did she say?"

"Say what?"

"Why she still loves him?"

"No."

----

Similarly, -- "That remark, "Smith couldn't get on without his trouble and strife,' meant that he found his wife -- unbearable as it is -- [he is actually referring to her as a piece of a trouble and a piece of a strife] still indispensable."

"I suppose," I reflected, that philosophers of language should just stick to "The cat is on the mat"?"

"Whoa: the prostitute ('the cat') being punished 'to the mat' by the pimp?".

"So what -- then?"

"Well, there's this one that Grice enjoys: "Have you stopped beating your wife?" Grice showed that the correct answer for the scenario when one has NOT even started or when one NEVER beat the wife is "No" -- and right he is."

"But surely everybody will be misled by the remark," I commented with reserve.

"That's THEM's [sic] problem. Imagine if just people people are idiots you have to bear them in their idiotic games?"
