If Schiffer cared... (Grice on "Schiffer" -- Carton 9, folder 9, the Grice Archive)

--
There is a whole folder, non-dated, entitled Schiffer.

Stephen R. Schiffer was born in Atlantic City. He met Grice in Oxford. They shared the good times. Schiffer is credited by Grice as early as 1967 (WoW:v).

Later, Schiffer would publish his DPhil as the book, "Meaning".

In 1982, Grice referred back to 'psuedo-Schifferian regresses'. He never could swallow Schiffer's attempt to bring in convention to questions of meaning. By 1987, Schiffer had said farewell to all that ("I trust Paul will bear of my apostasy", he wrote, bitterly, in the festschrift -- Grice never did.)

It shows a lot about academia that while Schiffer cared to publish his Remnants of Meaning in 1987, by 1988 he was accepting a commission by the Clarendon Press to reissue the earlier "Meaning"! -- would YOU do that?
