Grice cited by Peacocke in "The Theory of Meaning in Analytic Philosophy"

IN THIS EXCELLENT SURVEY (ed. by Follesdal), Peacocke extends (albeit briefly -- you need a genius to do that) on Grice. Peacoke is concerned with the 'theory' in the 'theory' of meaning. Grice dismissed 'theory'. He thinks 'meaning' has to be understood by appeal to INTUTITIONS, *NOT* theoretical concepts. Meaning is NOT a theoretical concept. It's what we intuit that judges us, rightly or wrongly, to say, "x means y". Peacocke, being a younger generation, is less of a Tarksian pessimistic -- and focuses on 'theories of truth' as well.
