Biographical Information

Herbert Paul Grice, born in 1913 in Birmingham, England, obtained his degree at Corpus Christi College in Oxford, where he returned to teach until 1967 after providing teaching services at a public school in Rossall. In 1967, H.P. Grice moved to California, becoming a professor of philosophy at the University of California, Berkeley where he remained until his death in 1988. His long list of contributions during his teaching career include the William James Lectures from 1967-1968, his publication of "Utterer's Meaning, Sentence-Meaning, and Word-Meaning," from 1968-1969, his Urbana lectures presented in 1970, "Logic and Conversation," published in 1975, Kant lectures delivered in 1978-1977, John Locke lectures presented in 1978-1979, and Carus lectures presented in 1983. Grice's publications and lectures are compilations of his extensive research performed in the philosophy of language, metaphysics, Aristotelian philosophy, philosophy of mind, and ethics. Grice is also attributed with coining the word "implicature" in 1968 to describe speakers, and for defining his own paradox known as "Grice's paradox," introduced in Grice's "Studies in the Way of Words," (1989) a volume of all his publications and writings.
Scope and Content of Collection

The H.P. Grice Papers (1947-1989) consists of publications, unpublished works, and correspondence from the notable English philosopher of language H. Paul Grice during his years as Professor Emeritus at Oxford until 1967 and University of California, Berkeley until his death in 1988. Also included are extensive notes and research, some in the form of audio files, Grice conducted on his theories of language semantics and theories of reason, trust, and value. His most popular lectures, including the John Locke lectures, William James lectures, Carus lectures, Urbana lectures, and Kant lectures are all documented as drafts and finalized forms of transcripts and audio files within the collection. Also included in the H.P. Grice collection is Grice's research on Aristotelian philosophy with Judith Baker and metaphysics with George Myro, his other research focusing on the philosophy of the mind with such subjects as perception. Also included is documentation of Grice's involvement with the American Psychological Association (APA) during his professorship at UC Berkeley.

  1. In previous posts to this blog, I have noted a few typos, and corrected them in my versions. From memory, these include:

American Psychological Association -- should read: "American Philosophical Association". I don't think Grice ever needed a psychologist!

    -- "implicative" should read "implicature"

-- "philosophy of the mind" should better read "philosophy of mind"

-- The Carus lectures were given in 1983 and not in 1993.

-- In most of my notes, in the previous blog posts to this, I have added the publication details of most of the stuff.

I would use "nondated" rather than 'undated'. And I have provided the details of publication, for things that are listed as 'undated' but which we can date pretty precisely.

Grice was NOT a professor at Oxford -- though. He is listed as "professor emeritus at Oxford", but he wouldn't have liked to be one.

    ----

I enjoyed to learn about a few items.

"A pint of philosophy", e.g. -- by one Gordon. Must get that.

I liked Grice's idea of the "Pirotese".

I liked it that he kept his notes on "ill-will". Call me wicked if I say I like that notion.

"Implicative" is used twice or 'thrice', but I would think is a typo for 'implicature'.

While Grice is credited with having 'coined' "implicature", the term appeared as used by Sidonius and listed indeed in the Oxford Latin Dictionary ('implicatura', of course).

    ---

In many cases, it's good to know that "Actions and Events", etc. were published, and during Grice's lifetime -- so a square bracket note would be helpful. (But of course Bancroft is promoting and advertising the uniqueness of the thing, so they would NOT be interested in that.

    ---

The series, cartons and folder system, I find a bit irritating. I cannot see the rationale behind the choice of Series. In my own edition of this, in previous blog posts -- I have made my proof-reading, appropriately. "Teaching materials", for example. Of course it's all to teach!

    ----

In some cases, it seems he kept mimeos by OTHER authors: Davidson, e.g.

    ---

No ref. to Warnock is made, but most of the Perception papers in the fourth series are co-written by them.

Chapman has cited quite a few of these items, and she has cared to quote from the stuff, too, so I know.

But Chapman's work is NOT exhaustive (nor was meant to be). In any case, page indication would have been good, and name index for more than recipient of correspondence.

"Mills Induction" should read "Mill's induction"

Descartes is "not" an "ancient philosopher". So in my own notes I have edited that.

    ----

    Etc.
