Flew: The St. John's Days -- with Grice

by JLS
----

Flew says in

http://www.finishingwell.com/blog/340

that he was in Oxford for 'a few terms' during the war. I wouldn't know exactly on what date Grice was at St. John's, though, after the Armestice.

In any way, I guess one would be wrong to think that Flew became an atheist because he crossed the road (or 'railway' as there then was) of St. Giles, from the boring college ("St. John's", that had Grice) to where all the fun was -- the Rabbit Room in the Fowl and Foetus. But this is what Flew says in the above link:

"I think they [C. S. Lewis -- recognised as Flew's influence in today's Times' obituary -- and Tolkine and the Inklings and the Socratic Club] all met rather regularly, very near my own college, on the other side of the railroad. One of the places was the pub that we irreverently called "The Bird and Baby.""

--- and some more irreverently as the Fowl and Foetus.

"Habermas: As I recall, that's in between here and your college, St. Johns.
Flew: YES!"

And if one wants to be informative enough, they met at the RABBIT room. Both the Fowl and Foetus and the Lamb and Flag are OWNED by St. John's, which is assumed to be the richest college, one does not wonder, seeing the liters of alcohol that flow there, in the pubs I mean --. Etc.
