Dictum, a better concept than "Say"

---

As when we say,

"The Says of Confucius".

If Grice rejects 'convention' as being either necessary of sufficient when it comes to analyse the 'eidos', 'morphe', forma, of what is signified, the also rejects any rough appeal to that most English of notions, 'the 'say'', when it comes to talk 'dictive'.

----

For Grice writes of 'dictiveness'

as being such that it will exist,

"whether or not the relevant signification
is part of what the signifying expression"

--- or its user, he drops the qualifying of such essential import here --

"says".

So what the utterer did say was

i. That those guys
ii. which were in the kitchen of the White House.
iii. utterered the noise 'High Ho'.

---

or alternatively that

i. the president's advisers.
ii. who were thus 'advising' the president.
iii. approved the idea by giving it the thumbs up.

----

Odd, but true!
