Grice, WoW:364:
"What is being sought and legitimately
fixed by fiat"
is NOT the conventional meaning
of this or that expression,
eg. French for 'spade'
"but a solid guarantee," Grice puts it,
"that, in ceratin conditions, in calling
something [e.g. a spade, or a pig] a
so-and-so [i.e. a pig, or a spade], one
[i.e. Grice] would NOT be miscalling
it [the spade, or the pig] a so-and-so."
-----
Geary once asked his daughter.
"Why are pigs called pigs?"
Her answer: "Because they are pigs."
