"The issue of substitution failures of co-referential names in opaque contexts has given rise to a huge literature, which is why I will tackle it very superficially here. See eg Salmon (86) or Soames (02) for a defense of the referential treatment of proper names that explains away the intuitions in terms of Gricean implicatures."
