Grice's "Hoot" and Austin's "Mistake"

When you browse through N. E. A.'s Key terms in pragmatics you'll get to the bio secitons and you'll read all about

Grice, Herbert Paul.

and before that

Austin, John Langshaw.

These were two _genii_.

Recall the conversation which Chapman transcribed from a tape for posterity:

The double act

Austin: Botanize!
Grice: I won't!
Austin: You _will_.
Grice: I _shan't_.

Grice: I don't give a hoot what the dictionary says.
Austin: And that's where you make your big mistake.

When I was seriously onto all this, I subscribed to U. M. I., to find that a man had actually written a PhD which he pompously called,

"A reconciliation of Austin and Grice"

You'd think it's a fun thesis, but it's not. It's all about _Strawson_!
