The self- of the -maton

---- by JLS
--------- for the GC

GRICE USES, as a lot of English speakers, 'automatic'. Grice is exploring this trend in his thought, that some things we do people think we may do 'tacitly': reason tacitly. Similarly, there are automatic actions, on which we don't have to 'decide' every time.

---

automaton
1610s, from L. "automaton" (Suetonius), from Gk. "automaton", neut. of automatos "self-acting," from autos "self" (see auto-) + "matos" "thinking, animated, willing," from PIE *mn-to-, from base *men- "to think" (see mind (n.)).

Again, the root is in Grice, MEANing, his MONIToring and his MNEMIC theory of personal identity. Perhpas MN is the single most important Indo-European root.
