Hamsphire 1951, The freedom of the will (Aristotelian Society)

by JLS
for the GC

A landmark. Any browsing of the journals that Grice was familiar with will retrieve many hits on freewill. Hampshire's is a landmark. In 1960 Pears invited Hampshire (but not Grice, alas) to give the third programme BBC lectures on "Freedom of the will". Two pieces by Hampshire got published in the proceedings.

Grice will attack Hamsphire's and Hart's 'certainty' principle (Mind 1958) in his influential, "Intention and uncertainty".
