Grice on 'knowledge'

---- by J. L. Speranza

SEEING THAT B. DOYLE HAS BUILT HIS SITE AROUND THREE OR FOUR BASIC IDEAS I am delighted that one of them is 'know' (as per 'knowledge') about which Grice says a good deal -- notably in WoW:III. What motivates Grice is not easy to pinpoint. Possibly a few things, but his analysis of 'know' on that one page of WoW has always proved elucidatory to me, and I always read it with Gettier in mind. I tend to think of Grice as weakening Gettier's claims and notably opting for a fully causal account of our 'epistemic' _factive_ operations, qua rational beings. Or something!
