Stroke of the Pen

--- This argument used by G. Evans, et al.

Grice is looking for a licensing of the inference:

~4G1ix3F1x2
_____
Therefore, Ex4~3G1x2

---

It's the

"Let's call him Bill" -- strategy.

He writes:

"If one is given the TRUTH of

"It is not the case that Mr. Spurgeon's haberdasher is bald"

on the basis of there being NO ONE who is

haberdasher to Mr. Spurgeon, all one has to do

is, first, to introduce a name, say 'Bill',

laying down that 'Bill' is to designate

whoever is haberdasher to Mr. Spurgeon.

And then, to assert, truly that it is not

the case that Bill is bald (since there is no

such person). Finally, to draw the conclusion,

now legitimate, that someone is not bald."
