Violating Grice's Cooperative Principle in Situational Comedies
by Cheryl Hindman
Hindman
analyzes how humour and jokes in situational comedies (sitcoms)
intentionally violate Grice’s Cooperative Principle, which states that
interlocutors contribute to a conversation only that which is required of it.
Grice’s maxims and humour is analyzed as is the violation of maxims in The
Yada Yada episode of the sitcom Seinfeld.
